Split + rename PDFs in one step

Docusplit AI —
Split multi-document PDFs and name each file by content

Upload one batch scan of invoices, letters and receipts. The AI finds where each document ends, splits the file and names every PDF by what it says. You check the filenames in the ZIP.

Definition

What Docusplit AI does

Docusplit AI is a web-based tool that splits multi-page PDFs into separate documents and names each file by its content. You pick one of two modes before uploading. In invoice mode the AI reads the invoice number, company name and date on every page. In document mode it first checks whether a page belongs to an invoice and otherwise reads the document type, the sender and the date. A continuation flag keeps multi-page documents together, for example when a page says "Page 2 of 3" or repeats the invoice number.

An invoice comes out as INV-2025-0281_Acme-Corp.pdf and a contract as Contract_Northwind-Ltd_2025-01-15.pdf, instead of scan_001.pdf. When the AI cannot read anything on a page, that page stays in the ZIP as Document_Page_7.pdf and shows up as "Not detected" in the CSV overview. Adobe Acrobat Pro splits by page count or bookmarks, and Docparser and Hazel rely on rules you set up yourself; here the split and the naming happen in the same upload, without templates.

The tool runs in the browser with nothing to install. The model reads documents regardless of language, tested on English, German, French, Spanish, Italian and Dutch; the interface and the CSV come in English and German. Files are transferred over TLS, kept only while processing and then deleted from our servers. AI analysis runs through the OpenAI API under a data processing agreement with OpenAI Ireland and Standard Contractual Clauses, is never used for training, and OpenAI retains API data for up to 30 days for abuse monitoring. See our privacy policy for details.

Split and name a PDF automatically in four steps

You upload and pick a mode, the AI splits and names, you check the filenames in the ZIP.

One PDF up to 50 MB, no page cap
Scanned and digitally created PDFs
Invoice mode or document mode
Transfer encrypted with TLS
Step 1

Upload PDF

Drag a PDF into the window or pick it from disk. Up to 50 MB per file, scanned or created digitally, with no cap on the number of pages. Before that you choose invoice mode or document mode.

Built for piles that arrive as one scan

The accounting firm's morning mail, the receipt folder at year-end, the tenant file at a property manager.

The receipt folder at year-end

Twelve months of receipts, invoices and notices, fed through the scanner in one go. Document mode turns the PDF into a ZIP with one file per receipt, with folders per month if you want them.

  • Invoices come out as InvoiceNumber_Company.pdf
  • Notices and letters come out as Type_Sender_Date.pdf
  • A folder per month, unclear pages in Unknown/
  • CSV overview to cross-check against your tax return

The tenant file at a property manager

Lease, move-in report, utility statement and correspondence arrive as one scan per unit. After the upload the letters are separate files with sender and date, and folders by sender keep tenants apart from utilities.

  • Lease_Northwind-Ltd_2023-06-01.pdf instead of scan_014.pdf
  • Multi-page leases stay one file
  • Folders by sender separate tenants, utilities and contractors
  • ISO dates in the name sort files chronologically

The accounting firm's morning mail

Yesterday's mail arrives as one 40-page scan of client letters, tax assessments, supplier invoices and reminders. One person uploads, the team gets single files with sender and date and files them by client.

  • Reminder_Summit-Telecom_2025-03-15.pdf sits next to INV-2025-0281_Acme-Corp.pdf
  • Continuation pages stay with their letter, no separator sheet needed
  • CSV overview with a confidence value per document for review
  • About 10 seconds per page in document mode, progress shown live

How the AI labels document types in document mode

The type label is free-form and goes at the front of the filename; the nine below are typical examples.

In document mode the AI first checks whether a page belongs to an invoice. Invoices get the invoice number and company in the filename. For everything else it assigns a short type label in the language of your interface, for example receipt, letter, contract, notice, payment reminder, form, insurance document or tax assessment, and adds the sender and the date. When it can read none of the three fields on a page, the file is called Document_Page_7.pdf and the CSV lists it as "Not detected". Handwriting, faded thermal receipts and scans below roughly 200 dpi are the usual reasons.

Frequently Asked Questions

What people ask before their first upload, from the split logic to cancellation.

Which document types are recognized?

In invoice mode the AI expects invoices only and reads the invoice number, company and date. In document mode it checks each page for an invoice and otherwise assigns a free-form type label such as letter, contract, notice, reminder, termination or confirmation, plus sender and date. Use document mode for mixed piles and invoice mode for pure invoice batches, which run faster at about 6 instead of 10 seconds per page.

How does the splitting work?

The AI reads each page as an image and decides whether a new document starts here or the page belongs to the previous one. Clues are "Page 2 of 3", a repeated invoice number, a missing letterhead or text that continues mid-sentence. You do not need separator sheets, barcodes or any pre-sorting.

What happens when the AI splits wrongly or cannot read something?

You will see it in the ZIP. Pages without readable data are named Document_Page_7.pdf or Invoice_Page_7.pdf, appear as "Not detected" in the CSV overview and, with folders by month, land in the Unknown/ folder. Check those files first. The usual trouble spots are handwriting, faded thermal receipts, scans below roughly 200 dpi, blank back pages, delivery notes next to invoices, and attachments without a letterhead, which can end up with the wrong document. There is no correction step inside the tool; you move or rename such files yourself.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. The subscription runs until the end of the paid period and then stops. You cancel from the dashboard through the Stripe customer portal.

How secure is my data?

Files are transferred over TLS, kept only while processing and then deleted from our servers. AI analysis runs through the OpenAI API (data processing agreement with OpenAI Ireland, Standard Contractual Clauses, never used for training; OpenAI retains API data for up to 30 days for abuse monitoring). See our privacy policy for details.

What happens when my page quota is used up?

A PDF is only processed if its page count still fits into your quota. Once the quota is used up, you wait for the reset on your billing date or move to a larger plan. The 30 trial pages are a one-time allowance; after that you need a paid plan.

Is there a money-back guarantee?

Yes, 14 days on every paid plan. An email to support is enough.

Does it work with scanned PDFs?

Yes. The AI reads each page as an image, so it makes no difference whether the PDF was scanned or created digitally. The output PDFs are copies of the original pages without an added text layer, so full-text search has to come from your archive. Scans below roughly 200 dpi are the most common reason for pages that end up as "Not detected".

How does Docusplit compare to Adobe Acrobat or iLovePDF?

Adobe Acrobat splits by page count, file size or bookmarks and is built for PDF editing and e-signatures; the split files get no content-based names. iLovePDF has offered AI-assisted splitting since May 2026 but does not name the files by content. Here the split and the naming happen in the same upload. The comparison pages list the differences line by line.
